The question you'll have to ask yourself when your windshield is damaged is whether the problem is small enough that it can be repaired, or large enough that your entire windshield needs to be replaced. Making this decision will depend on the condition of your windshield, as well as your budget. Here are some simple rules to consider if you're wondering whether your windshield requires replacement in Austin. Austin Windshield Repairor Replacement? 1. ...it has multiple chips.Rock chips - yes, those nasty little chunks or nicks taken out of your windshield by rocks or debris hitting the glass - can, believe it or not, warrant a full windshield replacement. Most people don't worry about chips too much, since they're often fairly small, but they can actually lead to trouble. Windshield chip repair is a cheap and easy fix (typically $60 in Austin), however if your windshield has three or more rock chips on it, it's probably time to consider a replacement. First of all, the cost of repairing each of those chips separately will add up, so that replacing the windshield altogether might actually be more cost effective, depending on the type of car you have (Mercedes-Benz probably not). Secondly, each of those chips creates a weakness in the windshield, and the more of them you have, the more prone the windshield will be to developing large cracks and the overall integrity of the structure will be degraded; which could come back to haunt you later. Particularly in hot climates like here in Austin, the expansion the glass undergoes when the sun hits it will wreak havoc on those chipped spots, and this could lead to a larger problem very quickly. Yes my fellow Austinites, those 100+ degree days can turn a small chip into 6 foot crack in the matter of a couple hours! 2. ... your windshield has damage that impairs your line of sight. 3. ...your windshield has a large crack, or one that extends to the edge of the glass. Austin Windshield Replacement CostHow much does windshield replacement cost in Austin Tx? The answer to that depends more on the vehicle itself than the company installing the new glass. With every windshield replacement job having a unique price depending on year, make, model, time of day/week/year, and company it's really impossible to say what your replacement will cost with exactitude. Instead let's look at some general pricing so that we can, at least, give the majority of people an idea. So 1st, ask yourself: Is my vehicle a common model or similar to other models? Has my body-style been in production for many years? Does my vehicle sell for under $30K new? If your answer to these questions is yes then you probably belong in the 1st group.Common Vehicles (older than 3 years): $180-$230 Chevy/Ford/Dodge Trucks, most domestic cars, & most economy vehicles Common Vehicles (new) & Unique Vehicles (older than 3 years):$230-$450 Scion, Volkswagen, Mitsubishi, Hummer, Audi, Infiniti, Buick, Cadillac, & Lincoln Unique Vehicles (new) & Luxury/Rare Vehicles: $450 & Up Mercedes, Land Rover, Lotus, Lexus, Audi, BMW, Corvette, Viper, Bentley, Maybach, Porsche, Acura, Bugati, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Alpha Romero, and the list goes on... Windshield Replacement in Austin Tx...the processIn order to remove and replace a windshield there are a number of things to consider and tools that will be required to complete the job. Light, moisture, temperature, and time are the first basic variables. Too dark, too wet, too cold, or not enough time to finish the job are good reasons to consider scheduling your installation for another time. First you will need adequate light to properly perform the tasks at hand. Then you will need to ensure the pinch-weld and new windshield are clean and dry, if the surface is dirty or wet you will end up with a leaky windshield. It is difficult to work in extreme cold or hot temperatures, not only that, each urethane (glue) used to seal the new windshield in place has a optimal temperature at which it will properly cure. Equally important is to be sure you have enough time to complete the job. Some installations can be very difficult and require a couple hours of time for more than one auto glass replacement professional. For most jobs be sure to have at least one hour set aside to complete the work. If step one is consideration of the aforementioned items then step two would be to choose your location to complete the work. This may not be an option depending on which windshield replacement company you choose. But if you are doing the job yourself or find a company that will do the job at your location, choose a spot where there won't be too much traffic. Choose a spot like your driveway or garage, or a parking spot towards the back of your parking lot. If you choose a public area try you must have an empty spot next to you to stage your tools and parts. Once the work commences step three will be the extraction of the windshield. In preparation you may want to remove the antenna and use masking tape to cover the painted parts around the windshield. Also covering the vents and speakers on the dash with masking tape can keep debris out while the windshield is removed. Remember the mouldings and trim may have a lot of dirt and debris build-up since the vehicle was first assembled, or last taken apart. If you are doing the job yourself then you are already aware of the many tools that can be used to extract the windshield; cold knives, piano wire, powered extractors, and long knives. Once you have carefully removed the trim, cowl, mouldings, etc and have the edge of the glass exposed you can begin extraction. Be very careful not to damage the edge of the paint or rest of the vehicle by careless use of these sharp and dangerous tools. After you have completely cut through the urethane and the windshield is ready to be removed carefully place the windshield on the side. Step four is preparation of pinch-weld and new windshield. Thoroughly clean and dry the windshield. Then apply the primer/activator as the instructions say. Do the same to the pinch-weld being careful not to leave dirt and debris where you will be laying the new urethane. Carefully remove and place all registration and inspection stickers on the new windshield. If additional mouldings that aren't already on the glass are required determine if these mouldings must be attached to the glass before setting the windshield, if so attach them now. Once all preparation is complete it is time to lay the urethane. Placing the perfect bead of urethane; step five. Only a seasoned veteran can lay the perfect bead of urethane, but taking your time and using your head can get you through this step without error. Place a nice fat 1.5 inch high bead of urethane in a straight line all the way around the pinch-weld. Be sure not to allow your bead to be irregular. If you don't create a perfect barrier around the pinch-weld you will have leaks because it has not completely sealed. Make haste because once the urethane has left the tube your time to before it sets is running out. Depending on your brand, type of urethane you may only have minutes before it's too late to set the new windshield in place. Immediately after you are sure the urethane is properly laid move on to step 6. Step 6: Setting the windshield in place. If you aren't a professional I advise you seek the assistance of friend to help you set the windshield in its proper place. Be careful not to place the windshield in the wrong position by taking your time and setting it down slowly aligning it to the right position by using your eyes and hands very carefully. Once you have set the windshield down in place put firm, but not overly firm, pressure on the glass ensure its bond to the urethane. Double check the mouldings and alignment and make any final adjustments necessary before the urethane cures. Cleaning up and replacing the trim is final step. Now that your new glass is in place cover the windshield with the cars trim, mouldings, and cowl as necessary. Placing each item where back in its orginal location. Clean up any debris, tools and masking tape used for the job and you are done. Remember not to drive the vehicle until the required time has elapsed as stated on your urethane's instructions. The urethane must properly cure before it is safe to drive the vehicle. This time is referred to as the "drive time" of the urethane and is very important. For the next few days it is advised not to use machine car washes and avoid powerwashing directly into the seal of the windshield. You have now successfully installed your new windshield.
